Prof. Lorenzo Schiano di Pepe visits Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law

On the afternoon of June 27, 2016, the 33th Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law invited Prof. Lorenzo Schiano di Pepe from Genova University, Italy. He gave a lecture entitled “Legal Issues on Marine Environmental Protection”.

This lecture was divided into three parts. First, Prof. Lorenzo gave an overview of the basic issues of marine environmental protection. He introduced the definition and characteristics of “marine pollution” focusing on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In the second part, Prof. Lorenzo combed and explained the sources of the marine environment pollution, including land-based activities, seabed activities, dumping, vessels, atmosphere involved in the convention. Third, Prof. Lorenzo analyzed the marine environmental protection in the Mediterranean region from the perspective of regional cooperation, pointing out that the UNCLOS has specially stipulated the protection and preservation of the marine environment. He also actively advocated the use of technical means in developing and formulating the international rules and standards consistent with the convention. Finally, Prof. Lorenzo exchanged ideas around the rights and obligations of semi-closed coastal countries in marine environment protection with students present.
