Lawyer Tan Biao visits RIEL Alumni Salon
On May 11, 2016, the Celebration Series for the 35th Anniversary of RIEL and 12th RIEL Alumni Salon invited Dr. Tan Biao, who is the current China's chief lawyer of US BorgWarner and also the 1997 Alumnus of RIEL. He gave us a wonderful lecture entitled “Experience of Foreign Legal Service”. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Qin Tianbao, and Prof. Ke Jian, Assoc. Prof. Luo Ji, Assoc. Prof. Li Guangbing, Dr. Hu Bin and all the graduate students attended.
First, Dr. Tan Biao made an objective and comprehensive analysis on job opportunities contained in foreign-related service market, he pointed out that the legal service was a professional service which need the accumulation of knowledge and experience. Students can measure advantages and disadvantages according to the work characteristics, their own abilities, trends and preferences when making employment choices. As an experienced lawyer in foreign-related legal services, Dr. Tan Biao showed his own views on competency requirements for foreign-related lawyers. He believed that, first, language skills were critical to those interested in foreign-related legal services, and talked about his personal experience of improving speaking, listening and writing. Second, foreign-related legal services require a profound legal foundation and professional knowledges. He also carried out combing and interpreting the basic process of legal analysis and legal writing, taking legal opinions and contract writing for examples. Third, he stressed that comprehensive skills should be strengthened, particularly the soft skills.
