RIEL hosted Seminar on Environmental Radiation Monitoring on Mining Area

The Seminar on Environmental Radiation Monitoring on Mining Area, hosted by RIEL and co-sponsored by the Hubei Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau, Hubei Center of Nuclear Radiation Environment Monitoring Technology and Hubei Environmental Science Society Institute, was held on March 16, 2016. Lou Hongxin, Zhou Qifu, Ma Chenghui and more than 20 persons participated in the seminar, which was presided by Zhang Gang, the director of Hubei Center of Nuclear Radiation Environment Monitoring Technology.

The director of RIEL Prof. Qin Tianbao first introduced the background, drafting process and main contents of “Regulation on Soil Pollution Prevention of Hubei Province”, focusing on the interpretation of the terms relating to radiation monitoring of mining area. Wang Xugu, the director of Nuclear Radiation Office of the Hubei Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau, stated that environmental protection departments need to take the responsibility of prior guidance, supervision and afterwards accountability after the regulations coming out. In order to implement the regulations, the Ministry of Environmental Protection should give priority to management practices, technical guidelines and contingency plans and so on. Liu Shaohui, the deputy director of Hubei Center of Nuclear Radiation Environment Monitoring Technology, made a detailed introduction of the radiation pollution control and environmental monitoring of mining areas in Hubei Province.

After that, all participants further discussed how to improve regulations and standards, clear management and responsibilities and improve environmental impact assessment technology of radiation pollution control and environmental monitoring in mining areas.
